About the Association
The Bywong Community Inc is an association of residents in the Bywong area with a focus on community concerns and well being.
Our aims are to:
Crystallise a sense of community in Bywong
Be a catalyst for building community spirit, participation and awareness
Give expression to, and protect the interests of, the community
The Association began life as the Gearys Gap Community Association. Members changed the name to Bywong Community after a poll of ratepayers chose the name "Bywong" for the locality in the context of a Shire Council review of locality boundaries and names.
The logo (above) used by Bywong Community Inc is a stylized interpretation of the Community Hall in Birriwa Road where our meetings and functions are held. Both the Community Hall and the logo were designed by Tim Haldon-Brown.
Bywong Community provides a public forum for the community eg, during Council elections candidates address the community directly through our meetings. At times we also have guest speakers address meetings on topics of local interest.
Residents concerns can be brought to community attention through the association and items concerning the community,,that people may not be aware of, can be publicised through the association
When the views of the community need to be expressed as a whole, we can act as a voice to Council or other bodies involved in the issue at hand, eg we lobbied intensively against the quarry development in the Sutton area. We also canvassed the community view on the naming of the area
The organisation is often the only community point of contact for people within the area in the absence of schools and special interest groups. Our social functions such as the annual Car Boot Sale provide both funds for the community as well as great entertainment. We also run a Trivia night and organise Bush Walks in the area. These are a valuable means for residents to meet their fellow community members.
Funds raised by the Community go back into the community. We are able to assist the local Brownies, Guides and Bush Fire Brigades as well as the SES, local sporting organisations and any other body who might be in need of support.
We are always on the lookout for opportunities to help the community by providing information on relevant community issues; support for community facilities for sport or recreation; financial assistance to appropriate community causes. We welcome your ideas or suggestions on any of these.
